What is the difference between psychiatry and therapy?

The primary difference is that psychiatrists are medical doctors who can prescribe medication and manage biological aspects of mental illness, while therapists (psychologists, counselors, social workers) provide talk therapy and behavioral strategies.

Do you prescribe controlled substances?

Yes, licensed psychiatrists and certain authorized medical professionals (such as nurse practitioners) can prescribe controlled substances for mental health, including stimulants for ADHD or benzodiazepines for anxiety. These medications require a comprehensive evaluation of symptoms and medical history.

How long is an initial evaluation?

An initial mental health therapy evaluation typically lasts between 60 and 90 minutes. This session is designed to gather a comprehensive history of your symptoms, personal history, and treatment goals. While standard, some evaluations may last up to 3 hours for complex cases, while others may be shorter.

What if I am in crisis?

If you are in a mental health crisis in Florida, immediate help is available 24/7 by calling or texting 988 to reach the Florida Suicide Prevention Lifeline. You can also chat online at 988lifeline.org. For immediate danger, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.

What to bring to your first visit?

For your first therapy session, bring a photo ID, insurance card, and payment method. Prepare a list of current medications (with dosages), relevant medical/psychiatric history, and your goals or main concerns for therapy. Wear comfortable clothing, arrive 15–20 minutes early for paperwork, and bring questions.

Can I book a counseling session online?

Absolutely! Our platform allows you to schedule and pay for counseling sessions with licensed mental health professionals. Just keep in mind that in most cases, the first consultation should be in person or an effective evaluation of the case.
